First School
Water Sanitation Project for Primary and High Schools Students in Banteay
Meas District, Kapot Province, Cambodia.
Rotary International has received and accepted matching-grant number
60805 benefiting primary and secondary students in Banteay Meas School
District, Cambodia. Maple Valley Rotary contributed $5,000 along with Phnom
Penh Metro Rotary’s contribution of $100. Rotary District 5030 matched these
funds with $5,000 and Rotary International with $7550. Total budget for the
project is $17,650. These proceeds will benefit 23,238 students in 52
schools by building water catchments systems and providing water filters for
52 schools in the district.
Currently Banteay Meas School District does not have pure drinking water
for students to drink while attending school. Some students bring water from
home and others drink water they collect from ponds and other surface water.
By providing clean drinking water we will reduce the incidence of
contracting water born viruses and bacteria.
Now that Rotary International has approved the project, Phnom Penh Metro
Rotarian Alex Tong will start ordering the water catchments systems and
water filters. They will construct the first system shortly and officially
dedicate the project. The remaining schools will receive their systems and
filters over the next few months. Maple Valley Rotary looks forward to
welcoming Alex Tong to our club in June when he will present the project at
a Friday meeting.
