“Journey with an Afghan School” is a project to build bridges between America and Afghanistan. It began just months after 9-11 and the Taliban were removed from power in Afghanistan. Communities from around America teamed up with project founder Julia Bolz, a nationally-recognized speaker and social justice advocate, who has been serving in Afghanistan for the past six years.

With the help of families and friends across the country, Julia’s team in Afghanistan (which partners with American Friendship Foundation) has built 10 new schools and repaired 17 others destroyed by war. They also have distributed textbooks, school supplies and athletic equipment; facilitated cross-cultural exchanges; created libraries; provided teacher trainings; and supported computer centers. Altogether, they serve over 20,000 Afghan students.

“Journey with an Afghan School” isn’t simply about building schools. It’s about building bridges and breaking down barriers between our countries. Currently 50,000 Americans from all over the country have “journeyed” with Julia and her colleagues in Afghanistan – from National Geographic to various family foundations and religious institutions. Her hope is that we would come to understand those who differ vastly in their expressions of religion, culture and scope of opportunities, and they would come to understand us.

Last year, several Rotary Clubs in the Pacific Northwest supported “Journey with an Afghan School.” Come hear Julia speak about Afghanistan, the work that she and other nongovernmental organizations are doing there, and ways that Rotary is helping make a difference in the developing world.
